Quick answer
Yes. Most Murphy beds can stand right on carpet. The cabinet has to sit level and be screwed into the wall studs, because soft carpet and the tack strip at the wall can tip it forward. A freestanding cabinet bed needs no wall at all, so carpet is even simpler.

The short version: carpet is fine, but it changes how you install the cabinet. This guide covers why, what to check before the bed arrives, and how the beds we sell handle a carpeted room. If you are still choosing, start with our Murphy beds and compare the freestanding Olivia cabinet bed.

Can You Put a Murphy Bed on Carpet?
Yes. You do not need a hard floor for a Murphy bed. Wall beds are installed on carpet all the time. What matters is that the cabinet stands straight and is fixed to the wall, so it cannot lean or move when the bed comes down.
Every vertical and horizontal wall bed we carry says the same thing on its product page: the bed must be anchored to the wall. Some, like the Pur, also mount to the floor. Carpet does not change that rule. It just makes getting a solid, level base a little more work.

Why Does Carpet Matter for a Wall Bed?
A Murphy bed is a tall cabinet with a heavy frame that swings out from it. When the bed is open, the weight moves forward, away from the wall. A soft floor under the front of the cabinet makes that forward pull worse. Here is what carpet changes:
- The pad squashes. Carpet and its underpad compress under weight, so a cabinet that looked level on day one can settle forward.
- The tack strip lifts the back. Most wall to wall carpet is held by a wood strip along the wall. It can raise the back edge of the cabinet and tilt it toward the room.
- The baseboard holds it off the wall. A cabinet pushed against a baseboard leaves a gap at the top, so the anchor screws pull it in at an angle.
- Screws need wood, not drywall. Carpet hides nothing on the wall, but people tend to trust the floor more than they should. The studs carry the load.
Safety rules already treat carpet as a tipping risk. The U.S. rule for dressers 27 inches and taller, made after September 1, 2023, includes a test called "carpet with child weight". A block goes under the rear legs to tilt the unit forward, the way carpet can, and a 60 lb weight hangs on the front (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission).
A wall bed is not a dresser, but the lesson is the same: soft floors tip tall furniture forward, so anchor it.
How Do You Install a Murphy Bed on Carpet?
Always follow the instructions that come with your bed. They are written for that frame and its pistons. In general, a carpet install looks like this:
- Find the studs where the cabinet will go and mark them. Our Heidi horizontal bed, for example, says the full and queen sizes should be fixed to a solid wall into at least two wood studs.
- Deal with the baseboard and tack strip so the cabinet back can sit flat against the wall (see the next section).
- Build the cabinet in place or close to it. A full wall bed cabinet is heavy and awkward to slide across carpet.
- Check level both ways, side to side and front to back. Press down on the front corners to see how much the carpet gives, then shim until it stays true.
- Anchor it to the studs with the hardware and screw pattern the maker gives. If the bed also mounts to the floor, fix that too.
- Test it slowly: open and close the bed a few times, then check level again after the first week, once the pad has settled.
We recommend two people or a qualified installer for every wall bed we sell. If you are pricing that, our guide to Murphy bed installation costs in Canada breaks it down, and how a Murphy bed works explains the pistons and pivot that make anchoring so important.

What About the Baseboard and Tack Strip?
This is the part most people miss. A wall bed cabinet wants to sit flat against the wall from top to bottom. A baseboard and a carpet tack strip both get in the way. There are a few common fixes, and your bed's instructions may name the one it wants:
- Take the baseboard off behind the cabinet only, then put it back on either side so the cut ends hide against the cabinet.
- Add a spacer at the top the same thickness as the baseboard, so the cabinet stays straight while it stands a little off the wall.
- Move or trim the tack strip under the cabinet footprint so the back edge is not lifted.
- Cut back the pad under the cabinet base on very thick, soft carpet, and leave the carpet itself in place.
If you rent, ask before you cut anything. A freestanding cabinet bed avoids all of this, which is one reason renters pick them. We compare both in cabinet bed vs Murphy bed.
Will a Murphy Bed Dent the Carpet?
A little. When a vertical wall bed is open, its fold down legs rest on the floor at the foot of the bed. The Heidi works the same way on its long side: you pull the handle, lower the frame and flip the legs down to the floor. Over time those spots can flatten the pile.
The cabinet base dents the carpet too, but it never moves, so you will not see it until you take the bed out. To keep the room tidy:
- Put small furniture cups under the leg spots if you leave the bed open for long stays.
- Use a low rug at the foot of the bed. Keep it thin so the legs still sit flat.
- Fold the bed up during the day when you can. That gives the pile a chance to recover.

Does Carpet Change the Ceiling Height You Need?
It can. A vertical wall bed needs room above the cabinet to swing. Our Key West queen, for example, needs a 92.1 inch ceiling and extends 92.9 inches from the wall when open. Carpet and pad raise the cabinet by their squashed thickness, so measure the ceiling from the top of the carpet, not from the subfloor.
Also measure the open length across the carpet. Leave clear floor for the bed plus space to walk. The Pur asks for about 30 to 36 inches of clearance around the open bed. Our Murphy bed dimensions guide lists the space each size needs, and a horizontal bed like the Heidi is the fix for a low basement ceiling.
Can a Cabinet Bed Go on Carpet?
Yes, and it is the easiest choice for a carpeted room. A cabinet bed is a low chest that opens into a bed. It does not hang on the wall, so there are no studs to find, no baseboard to remove and no holes to patch later.
The Olivia cabinet bed is freestanding with no wall mounting. Its sleeping surface sits about 12 inches off the floor once open, and the queen needs about 83 inches of clear floor in front of the cabinet to fold down. The Stow Queen sits against the wall like a dresser; its cabinet box weighs about 152 lb, and the top of the mattress is 18 inches off the floor.

Two tips for carpet: set the cabinet where it will live before you open it the first time, and check that it sits flat. A heavy chest can sink a little at one corner on soft pad, so a shim under that corner keeps the doors and the fold out lined up.

Pick a wall bed if you want a full mattress of your own choice and a bed that disappears into the wall. Pick a cabinet bed if you rent, move often or do not want to touch the baseboard. Both work on carpet.

Murphy Beds on Carpet: Questions
Can you put a Murphy bed on carpet?
Yes. Wall beds are installed on carpet all the time. The cabinet must sit level and be anchored into the wall studs, because carpet and the tack strip can tip it forward.
Do you have to remove the baseboard for a Murphy bed?
Often, yes, or you add a spacer at the top so the cabinet stays straight. The goal is a cabinet that sits flat against the wall. Follow your bed's instructions.
Can you put a mattress on carpet?
You can, but a mattress straight on carpet gets little airflow. On a wall bed the mattress sits on slats, so carpet is not a problem for it.
Can I put a regular mattress in a Murphy bed?
On most wall beds, yes. The Key West queen takes a standard 60 by 80 inch mattress 8 to 12 inches thick. Cabinet beds like the Olivia come with their own tri-fold mattress.
How do you keep a Murphy bed mattress in place?
With straps. The Key West includes a mattress strap, and the Heidi has straps that hold the mattress when the bed is folded up.
