Where Can You Donate Furniture in Calgary? Who Takes What

Quick answer

Furniture in good shape can go to the Calgary Drop-In Centre (drop off only) or a Habitat for Humanity ReStore, which offers free pickup for larger items. Goodwill, WINS and some MCC Thrift shops take it too. Broken pieces go to a City Eco Centre. Replacing it? See our Calgary furniture store.

New sofa, old sofa. When you replace furniture in Calgary, the old piece has to go somewhere. If it is still clean and solid, a local charity can pass it on to a family that needs it. If it is broken, the City has a place for that too.

Every charity has its own rules, and they change. We read each one's own donation page on October 26, 2026, and put the answers side by side: who takes furniture, who takes mattresses, and who will come and get it. When you are ready for the new piece, our Calgary furniture store is open every day.

In this guide

Where Can You Donate Furniture in Calgary?

These are the main places that say on their own pages that they take furniture:

  • Calgary Drop-In Centre, Free Goods Program. Takes furniture in good condition and gives it free to people in need. Drop off at 3640 11a Street NE, 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Sunday, closed on statutory holidays. No pickup. (Free Goods FAQ)
  • Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Takes furniture, appliances and building materials and sells them to support Habitat for Humanity. Two Calgary stores: 7291 11 St SE (Deerfoot Meadows) and 3465 Sunridge Way NE, both open 9 am to 5 pm daily. (donation guidelines, locations)
  • Women in Need Society (WINS). Takes donations at its Donation Centre and its Dover and MacLeod thrift stores. It uses outside companies to collect larger items such as furniture. (collector services)
  • Goodwill Alberta. Lists furniture and fixtures among the items its donation centres take, including in Calgary. (donate page)
  • MCC Thrift. Takes furniture at limited locations only, and asks you to call your shop first. The Calgary shop is at 2946 32 St NE. (donate page, Calgary shop)

Two well known Calgary donation services do not take furniture. Calgary Donations, which picks up for free, lists "any furniture" and mattresses as not accepted (acceptable donations). Cerebral Palsy Alberta collects clothing and small household items, not furniture. Save those two for your boxes of smaller things.

From each organization's own page, checked October 26, 2026. Rules change, so call or check the page before you load the truck.

What stands out:

  • Only the Drop-In Centre says yes to mattresses, and only in very good condition. The City of Calgary also points usable mattresses to WINS thrift stores, so ask them too.
  • Of the pages we checked, only the ReStore says its furniture pickup is free. Older guides online quote a fee for ReStore pickup, but its own page now says the pickup for larger items is free.
  • The free pickup service most people find first does not take furniture. Calgary Donations is for bags and small boxes.

Who Picks Up Furniture Donations for Free in Calgary?

The ReStore is the one to try first. Its guidelines say to fill in the donation form and request a free pickup for larger items, and it schedules the pickup after you send the form. Every donation is reviewed, and it can say no based on condition or what the store needs right now.

If the ReStore cannot take it, here is what is left:

  • WINS: books pickups through outside moving and hauling companies. Those services charge a fee, so get a price first.
  • Drop-In Centre: no pickup. Its FAQ suggests hiring an independent mover.
  • Give it away yourself: the City suggests giving good furniture to family and friends or posting it on sites like Facebook Marketplace.

Can You Donate a Mattress in Calgary?

Yes, but it is the hardest item to give away. The Drop-In Centre takes mattresses and box springs only in very good condition, free from stains or tears. Habitat ReStore says no to mattresses, sofa beds and futons. MCC Thrift asks you to check with your shop, and Calgary Donations does not take them.

The City's mattress page sends unusable mattresses to a City Eco Centre, where charges apply. It also suggests asking your mattress store whether it has a recycling program, and names Re-Matt, a local mattress recycler, where fees may apply.

Planning the new one? A boxed mattress is easy to get home. Our 10 inch Chime memory foam mattress arrives rolled in a box, and the queen weighs 61 lb (about 28 kg) per the maker's spec. See more in mattresses in Calgary.

What Condition Does Furniture Need to Be In?

Charities sell or give away what you bring, so they turn down anything they cannot pass on. From their pages:

  • Clean and whole. The ReStore wants items free of rips, stains or heavy wear. MCC Thrift turns away dirty, broken, stained or smoky items, and items with a lot of pet hair.
  • All the hardware. The Drop-In Centre takes furniture in pieces if it has all its screws, bolts and other hardware. Tape a bag of them to the frame.
  • Not on the Drop-In list: broken, ripped or stained furniture, cribs, car seats and high chairs, large office furniture, large buffets or china cabinets, outdoor furniture and exercise machines.
  • Call ahead with big loads. The Drop-In Centre asks you to call before you arrive with a large delivery.

A quick test: would you be happy to get it as a gift? If yes, a charity will likely take it. If not, skip to the next section.

What Do You Do With Broken Furniture in Calgary?

The City's furniture page covers it. Small broken items like lawn chairs, stools and small tables can go in your black cart. Do not leave anything in the alley for pickup. Large old and broken furniture goes to a City Eco Centre, where charges apply.

The Eco Centre page lists a rate of $25 per load under 250 kg (550 lb). At 250 kg and over, you pay by the weight of the whole load. The page lists mattresses under garbage at the basic rate.

How heavy is a load of furniture? Here are real weights from the maker's spec on our product pages, to give you a sense of scale:

  • Kimlee 3 piece sectional with a chaise: 334 lb, about 152 kg.
  • Kimlee 2 piece super chaise: 190 lb, about 86 kg.
  • Chime 10 inch queen mattress: 61 lb, about 28 kg.

Even a big 3 piece sectional and a queen mattress together come to about 179 kg, well under the 250 kg line. Older solid wood pieces can weigh more, so the scale at the gate decides. One trip with everything is cheaper than two.

Which Option Is Right for Your Piece?

  • Good condition and you have a truck: drop it at the Drop-In Centre or a ReStore.
  • Good condition, no truck: book a free ReStore pickup, or post it free online.
  • A mattress in very good condition: the Drop-In Centre, or ask WINS.
  • A sofa bed or futon: not the ReStore and not MCC Thrift. Try the Drop-In Centre if it is clean and works, or give it away.
  • Broken, stained or worn out: a City Eco Centre, $25 a load under 250 kg.
  • Small items, clothes and dishes: Calgary Donations will pick them up for free.

Replacing What You Gave Away?

Measure the space you just cleared before you shop: the wall length, the room depth and the narrowest door on the way in. Then compare it with the maker's sizes on each product page. The Kimlee 3 piece sectional, for example, is 141 inches long and 94 inches deep.

If the old piece was a bed in a spare room, think about what the room does the rest of the year. A cabinet bed like the Olivia is a 40 inch tall chest that opens into a queen bed and needs no wall mounting. The room can be an office most days and a guest room when family visits.

The Olivia is on the floor at our Calgary store. Our post on beds for a Calgary basement suite covers the space you need.
