Does IKEA Sell a Murphy Bed in Canada? What to Buy Instead

Lots of Canadians search for an IKEA Murphy bed. It makes sense: IKEA is known for small space furniture, and a bed that folds into the wall is the classic small space fix. But IKEA does not make one for the Canadian market, so people end up looking at hacks, daybeds or sofa beds instead.

Does IKEA Sell a Murphy Bed in Canada?

No. We searched IKEA Canada's website on October 28, 2026. Here is what came back:

• "murphy bed": 46 products, all sofa beds, sofa bed covers, sleeper sections and one futon.
• "wall bed": the top 60 results were regular bed frames, loft and bunk beds, and wall cabinets. None folds up into the wall.
• "fold down bed": sofa beds, loft beds, daybeds and one folding mattress.

IKEA has shown wall bed ideas in the past, and you will find videos of them online. But as of October 2026 there is no IKEA Murphy bed you can order in Canada. The closest things it sells are daybeds that pull out and sofas that fold into beds.

What Is the IKEA Murphy Bed Hack?

The "IKEA hack" is a do it yourself project. People build a tall wardrobe or cabinet from IKEA parts, then fit a Murphy bed hardware kit made by another company inside it. IKEA does not sell that hardware, so the hack is really two products joined together by you.

Before you try one, know what you are taking on:

• The anchor matters most. A wall bed has to be fixed to the wall. Our own Heidi full and queen, for example, go into at least two wood studs. Follow the hardware kit maker's rules, not a video.
• The springs or pistons must match the mattress weight. Kits are sized for a set mattress size and thickness.
• It takes real time and tools. Expect cutting, drilling and at least two people.
• Nobody warrants the whole thing. Each part has its own maker, so if the bed and cabinet do not work well together, that is on the builder.

What Does IKEA Sell Instead of a Murphy Bed?

IKEA's small space beds are daybeds and sofa beds. Here are three popular ones, with the sizes and prices IKEA Canada lists on each product page (prices checked October 28, 2026):

• HEMNES daybed frame with 3 drawers: $499 for the frame. It is 41 3/8 inches wide and 78 3/8 inches long as a single bed, and pulls out to 76 3/4 by 78 3/8 inches. It takes two mattresses of 38 1/4 by 74 1/2 inches. The set with 2 mattresses is $658.98.
• BRIMNES daybed frame with 2 drawers: $399 for the frame. It is 41 by 76 3/4 inches closed and pulls out to 78 by 76 3/8 inches. The set with 2 mattresses is $558.98.
• FRIHETEN sofa-bed: $999. It is 88 5/8 inches wide and 41 3/8 inches deep as a sofa, and the bed is 56 3/4 by 78 3/8 inches.

All three stay on the floor all day. A daybed works as a sofa or a single bed, and a sofa bed is a couch first. That is a different idea from a Murphy bed, which hides the whole bed flat against a wall. Our post on Murphy bed vs sofa bed goes deeper on that choice.

How Much Floor Does Each One Take?

We worked out the floor area of each bed, closed and open, from the maker's own measurements. For IKEA we used its measurements tab; for ours, the specs on our product pages.

Floor = width times depth in day mode, and width times length (or reach from the wall) as a bed. IKEA sizes from ikea.com/ca, checked October 28, 2026. Our sizes are the maker's specs on our product pages.

What the numbers say:

• In day mode, our queen fold away beds take about 10 to 12 sq ft. The IKEA daybeds and sofa bed take about 22 to 25 sq ft, roughly twice as much.
• As a bed, they are much closer. Every option needs about 31 to 48 sq ft when it is open, so plan the same walking space around any of them.
• The Heidi Grey is the slimmest at 9.8 sq ft closed, but a horizontal wall bed needs about 85 inches of clear wall.
• A daybed gives you seating and drawers in that extra floor space. A wall bed gives you the floor back.

Where Does IKEA Win, and Where Does a Fold Away Bed Win?

To be fair to both, here is where each one comes out ahead.

IKEA wins on:

• Price. A BRIMNES daybed set with 2 mattresses is $558.98. Our lowest priced wall bed is the Heidi twin at $1,424.99, frame only.
• Seating by day. A daybed or sofa bed is also your couch.
• Storage. The HEMNES has 3 drawers and the BRIMNES has 2.
• Stores to visit. IKEA has many stores across Canada where you can sit on them.

A Murphy bed or cabinet bed wins on:

• Floor space by day. About half the floor of a daybed when it is put away.
• One full size mattress. Our queen wall beds take a regular queen mattress, and our cabinet beds come with a tri-fold queen mattress, instead of two narrow mattresses side by side.
• A made bed that disappears. The bedding can stay on when it folds away.
• No wall needed, if you pick a cabinet bed. The Olivia and the Stow are freestanding, which suits renters and concrete basement walls. See which beds need a wall.

A simple way to choose:

• Tight budget and you want a couch too: an IKEA daybed or sofa bed.
• Someone sleeps there most nights and you want the room back by day: a horizontal or vertical Murphy bed with a good queen mattress.
• You rent, have concrete walls, or may move: a cabinet bed like the Olivia or Stow, which needs no drilling.
• Low basement ceiling: a horizontal wall bed or a cabinet bed. A vertical queen like the Key West needs a 92.1 inch ceiling.

IKEA Murphy Bed Questions

Does IKEA make a Murphy bed?

Not for Canada. When we searched IKEA Canada's website on October 28, 2026, a search for murphy bed showed only sofa beds and futons, and a search for wall bed showed regular bed frames.

Can you turn an IKEA wardrobe into a Murphy bed?

People do, with a Murphy bed hardware kit from another company fitted inside an IKEA cabinet. IKEA does not sell the hardware. The bed must be anchored to the wall the way the kit maker says.

Is there an IKEA cabinet bed?

No. Its closest pieces are daybeds and sofa beds. A cabinet bed is a chest about waist high that opens into a bed and needs no wall mounting.

What is cheaper than a Murphy bed?

A daybed or sofa bed usually costs less. At IKEA Canada the BRIMNES daybed frame is $399. The trade off is that it takes about twice the floor space in day mode.

Does a Murphy bed have to be attached to the wall?

Yes. A wall bed is anchored to the wall, often into wood studs. A cabinet bed like the Olivia stands on its own and needs no wall mounting.
