Massage Chair Size: How Much Room Does a Massage Chair Need?

Last updated October 2026 by the Forward Furniture team

A massage chair is the biggest chair most people will ever bring home. It is deeper than a recliner, it reclines further, and it arrives in one heavy box. Most product pages list a single set of numbers, which makes it hard to tell if one will really fit your room.

This guide puts the real sizes of the chairs we sell side by side, upright and reclined, in inches and centimetres. Every figure comes from the maker's spec on each product page. Our full body chairs start at $1,499.99 for the Bliss Pro, and you can see them all in our massage chair collection.

How Big Is a Massage Chair?

A full body massage chair has three sizes that matter: its size upright, its size fully reclined, and the size of the box it ships in. The width changes too, because the arm airbags open out when the massage runs. Here are all three for each of our chairs.

Sizes and weights are the maker's spec on each product page; centimetres are our own conversion. Prices from our catalogue, read October 2, 2026.

Two things stand out. First, all three chairs need the same 62 inches of depth once they recline, even though the Nirvana is the longest upright. Second, the boxes are all 30 inches wide, which is the number that decides whether a chair gets through your front door.

How Much Room Do You Need for a Massage Chair?

Plan for the chair at full recline, not the chair as it looks in the showroom. A massage chair that fits upright can still hit a wall, a door or a coffee table once it tips back into zero gravity.

• Depth: our product pages ask for at least 62 inches (157 cm) of clear floor so the chair can recline fully.
• Width: 28 to 30 inches for the chair, plus a few inches each side so the armrests and airbags can open.
• Height: 40 to 45 inches upright, so a window sill or low shelf behind it is rarely a problem.
• Power: a standard 110V outlet within reach of the cord. No special wiring is needed.

Put together, that is a rectangle about 30 by 62 inches, or 12.9 square feet. Round it up to a 3 by 6 foot patch of floor and you have room to get in and out.

Picking the spot is its own decision: traffic, privacy, outlets and flooring all play a part. Our guide on where to put a massage chair in your house walks through each room.

Can a Massage Chair Fit Through a Door?

Yes, in most homes. The Bliss Pro, Serenity and Nirvana each arrive fully assembled in one box about 30 inches wide, and each is built to fit through a standard 32 inch doorway without taking it apart. There is nothing to bolt together when it arrives.

Older homes, basement stairs and tight hallway turns are where problems start. Check these before you order:

1. Measure the narrowest door on the way in, with the door fully open. Measure from the door stop, not the frame.
2. Measure hallway widths, and any corner the box must turn.
3. On stairs, check the ceiling height over the steps and any landing turn.
4. Plan for the weight: about 135 lb for the Bliss Pro and Serenity, and 187 lb for the Nirvana. The product page recommends two people to carry the Nirvana in from the curb.

If your path is tight, our step by step guide on how to move a massage chair covers stairs, dollies and when to call movers.

What Size Massage Chair Do I Need for My Height and Weight?

Body fit matters as much as room size. If you are too tall for a chair, the shoulder airbags and rollers land in the wrong place and your feet will not sit right in the foot well. If you are near the weight limit, the chair has to work harder on every session.

• Bliss Pro: fits people from 5 ft to 6 ft 2 in, up to 225 lb.
• Serenity: fits people from 5 ft to 6 ft 3 in, up to 245 lb.
• Nirvana: fits people from 5 ft to 6 ft 5 in, up to 275 lb.

Size the chair to the tallest and heaviest person who will use it most. A family with a 6 foot 4 partner should look at the Nirvana, the only one of the three that fits past 6 foot 3. The Nirvana also has our widest seat, opening to 30 inches.

The Bliss Pro is the most compact of the three. It has 6 rollers in 3 pairs, heat on the back and calves, and an arm touchscreen instead of a handheld remote, so there is no remote to lose beside the chair.

Is a Massage Recliner Smaller Than a Massage Chair?

Shorter upright, but not much smaller once it reclines. Our Power Massage Recliner with 2 Memory Positions ($769.99) is 35.4 inches wide, 35.4 inches deep and 41.3 inches tall. Reclined, it stretches to 61.8 inches deep, almost the same as a full body chair.

The real difference is the wall. That recliner needs only 13.8 inches between its back and the wall when reclined, per the maker's spec. It is a wider chair, but it can sit closer to a wall, which helps in a small living room. It holds up to 265 lb.

Maker's spec from each product page; prices from our catalogue, read October 2, 2026.

A recliner gives a gentle vibration, not a roller massage. If knots in your back are the reason you are shopping, a full body chair is worth the extra floor. Our massage chair buying guide explains the other trade-offs.

How to Measure Your Room for a Massage Chair

Ten minutes with a tape measure saves a lot of trouble on delivery day. Here is the method we suggest to anyone who asks us about fit.

1. Mark a rectangle on the floor with painter's tape: 30 inches wide and 62 inches long.
2. Check that nothing sits inside it: no table legs, vents or door swing.
3. Add a few inches of space at each side for the arm airbags.
4. Find the nearest outlet and make sure the cord can reach without an extension cord across a walkway.
5. Walk the delivery path and note the narrowest door, hallway and stair turn.
6. Compare those numbers with the box size in the table above.

A massage chair draws little power, so any normal outlet will do. See how much electricity a massage chair uses for the numbers.

Our Bliss Pro, Serenity and Nirvana each ship fully assembled in a box about 30 inches wide and fit through a standard 32 inch doorway. Measure your narrowest door with it fully open, plus any tight hallway or stair turn.

How heavy is a massage chair?

Do massage chairs fit tall people?
