Why Are Dressers So Expensive? What Each Price Range Gets You

Quick answer

Dressers cost a lot because they are mostly drawers, and every drawer is its own small box with sides, a bottom, glides and a pull. Better dressers add wood veneer, dovetail joints and ball-bearing glides, and can weigh twice as much. Ours run from the 4-drawer storage tower at $164.99 to the Frantanna at $1,959.99. A dresser looks like a simple wooden box, so a four figure price tag can be a shock. To see where the money goes, we went through every dresser and chest of drawers in stock in our catalogue on October 11, 2026: 52 of them, plus 7 fabric drawer towers and 21 dresser and mirror sets. We grouped them by price and read what each maker lists for materials, drawer joints, glides and weight. Keeping track of that much stock is a job of its own, and Cin7 once wrote a short case study on how we moved our stock out of spreadsheets.

Below you will find what a dresser costs in Canada, the six things that drive the price, and how to spot a well made one. Shop as you read in our dressers collection, which also has dresser and mirror sets.

How Much Does a Dresser Cost in Canada?

In our catalogue, dressers and chests of drawers run from the 3-Drawer Chest of Drawers with Gold Handles at $285.99 to the Frantanna at $1,959.99. About half of them cost $729.99 or less, the price of the Covetown. Here is how the 52 pieces split into four price bands.

Band In stock Price range Weight What the makers list
Entry 18 3-Drawer Chest of Drawers with Gold Handles $285.99 to 6-Drawer Dresser with Gold Legs $494.99 111 to 145.4 lb (6 list a weight) 16 of 18 list particleboard or MDF; none list dovetail drawers; 12 say assembly required; 16 mention an anti-tip design or the stability standard
Mid 10 Battelle $529.99 to Fortlorn $929.99 137 to 187 lb 9 of 10 list a laminate, vinyl or painted face; 2 list dovetail drawers; 6 say assembly required
Upper mid 11 Lyncott $1,029.99 to Taffenbrook $1,479.99 183 to 271 lb 9 of 11 list hardwood solids; 7 a real wood veneer; 9 dovetail drawers; 9 ball-bearing glides
Top 13 Rowlenstown $1,519.99 to Frantanna $1,959.99 222 to 279 lb 7 of 13 list a real wood veneer; 5 dovetail drawers; extras such as built-in lighting

From our catalogue on October 11, 2026: in-stock dressers and chests of drawers only, not mirrors, vanities or fabric towers. Each count is how many product specs mention that feature.

The pattern is easy to read. In the entry and mid bands, most makers list particleboard or MDF, often with a laminate or painted face. In the upper mid band, most list hardwood solids, a real wood veneer, dovetail drawers and ball-bearing glides. Top band pieces are among the heaviest, and some add extras like built-in lighting.

Why Are Dressers So Expensive?

Six things push the price up. Most of them come down to the drawers, because that is where a dresser does its work every day.

  1. It is really six or seven boxes. Each drawer needs sides, a back, a bottom, a front, two glides and a pull, all cut to fit closely so it runs straight. A seven drawer dresser like the Covetown is seven small builds inside one big one.
  2. Materials. Particleboard and MDF are made from wood chips or fibres and glue. They are cheap and flat. Real wood veneer and hardwood parts cost more and need more finishing work.
  3. Drawer joints. Dovetail joints lock the drawer corners together like fingers, so the front does not pull loose when the drawer is full. Simpler drawers rely on screws, dowels or glue.
  4. Glides. Metal ball-bearing side glides roll smoothly even with a full load. A centre guide or plain runner costs less and feels it.
  5. Weight and size. Wood is heavy, and big heavy boxes cost more to make, store and ship. Our entry dressers that list a weight come in at 111 to 145.4 lb. Top band ones weigh 222 to 279 lb.
  6. Safety testing. Tall dressers have to resist tipping over. Stable designs, anchor kits and lab tests are part of the cost.

Do Dressers Have to Meet a Safety Standard?

Yes, and it is part of what you pay for. Health Canada checks free-standing dressers and chests taller than 27 inches against the ASTM F2057-19 stability standard (Health Canada, page updated July 4, 2023). On the same page it says it knows of 87 reports of furniture tip-overs in Canada between June 20, 2011 and December 31, 2022, including 9 deaths and 41 injuries.

In the United States, a federal rule covers dressers 27 inches or taller made after September 1, 2023. They must pass three tests: drawers loaded with the weight of clothing, a 10 lb pull at the top, and a 60 lb weight hung on the front while the dresser stands on carpet (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission).

Read the spec line before you buy. The maker of our Finch dresser says it is designed to meet ASTM F2057, and 16 of our 18 entry dressers mention an anti-tip design or the standard. Whatever you buy, anchor it to a wall stud, most of all in a child's room.

What Material Are Most Dressers Made Of?

Most are made of engineered wood. Of our 52 dressers, 37 list MDF, particleboard or engineered wood, 16 list a real wood veneer, and 15 list hardwood solids or solid wood parts. Many list more than one. Here is what each term means.

  • Particleboard: wood chips pressed with glue. Low cost and heavy, but it does not hold screws well if you take it apart and rebuild it often.
  • MDF: fine wood fibres pressed into a smooth, flat board. It takes paint and veneer well and resists warping.
  • Laminate or melamine: a printed face over particleboard or MDF. Tough and easy to wipe clean, but you cannot sand or refinish it.
  • Wood veneer: a thin slice of real wood glued over MDF. You get real grain on a stable core.
  • Hardwood solids: solid wood parts, usually the frame, legs, trim or drawer fronts.

Here is the part most people miss: even our dearest dressers use MDF as the core. The Cabalynn, at $1,869.99, lists hardwood solids, hickory veneer and MDF substrates. That is not a shortcut. Solid wood panels swell and shrink as the air gets damp or dry, and a dry Canadian winter can open gaps or crack a finish. A veneer over MDF stays flat.

What Do You Get When You Pay More?

The clearest way to see it is to line up five real pieces, from a fabric tower to a top band dresser. Every fact comes from the maker's spec on each product page.

Piece Price Drawers W x D x H Weight Built from Drawers and glides
4-drawer storage tower $164.99 4 fabric bins 17.75 x 11.75 x 36.25" 12 lb Steel frame, MDF top, linen fabric bins Removable bins, 6.6 lb limit per bin
Finch $419.99 6 59 x 18.75 x 28.78" 139 lb Engineered wood with laminate Ball-bearing glides, vinyl wrapped drawer sides
Covetown $729.99 7 62 x 16 x 36.25" 161 lb Hardwood solids, wood veneer, MDF Dovetail drawers, metal centre guides, lined interiors
Lyncott $1,029.99 6 61.25 x 17.88 x 37.5" 214 lb Hardwood solids, mango veneer, MDF Dovetail drawers, heavy duty ball-bearing side glides
Cabalynn $1,869.99 6 72 x 20.13 x 39.88" 276 lb Hardwood solids, hickory veneer, MDF Dovetail drawers, ball-bearing side glides

Sizes and weights from the maker's spec on each product page. Prices from our catalogue, read October 11, 2026.

Look at the weight column. The Cabalynn weighs about twice what the Finch does, so you are buying more wood. But the price per pound climbs too: about 3 dollars a pound for the Finch and about 7 for the Cabalynn. The extra money goes into veneer, hardwood parts, dovetail joints and better glides, not just size.

Is a Dresser and Mirror Set Worth It?

A set gets you a mirror made to fit the top of that dresser. On the 13 dressers we sell both ways, the set costs 15 to 21 percent more than the dresser alone. The Covetown is $729.99 on its own and the Covetown dresser and mirror is $879.99.

A mirror makes the most sense over a low, wide dresser in a main bedroom. In a kids room or a closet, skip it and put the money toward better drawers.

How Can You Tell a Well Made Dresser?

You do not need to be a woodworker. Run these checks in a store, or look for them in the product spec.

  • Pull every drawer all the way out. It should run straight, not rub or wobble, and stop before it falls out.
  • Look at the drawer corners. Dovetail joints, the interlocking fingers, hold up best under heavy loads.
  • Check the glides. Metal ball-bearing side glides stay smooth when the drawer is full. A single centre guide is fine for light use.
  • Look inside the drawers. A finished or lined interior will not snag your clothes.
  • Read the weight. Two dressers of about the same width can differ by 50 lb or more, as the Covetown (161 lb) and the Lyncott (214 lb) show. Most of that is wood.
  • Find the stability line. Look for ASTM F2057 on the spec and an anti-tip kit in the box.

How Much Should You Spend on a Dresser?

Match the dresser to how hard it will work.

  • Closet, dorm or light use: a fabric tower like the 4-drawer storage tower at $164.99 holds folded basics. Each bin is rated for 6.6 lb, so keep it light.
  • Kids room or guest room: an entry six drawer like the Finch at $419.99 or the 6-Drawer Dresser with Gold Legs at $494.99. Anchor it to the wall.
  • Main bedroom, daily use: step up to dovetail drawers and ball-bearing glides, like the Lyncott at $1,029.99.
  • A statement piece or a full set: the top band, like the Cabalynn at $1,869.99, which is 72 inches wide.

Dresser Prices: Common Questions

How much do good dressers cost?

In our catalogue, the lowest priced dresser that lists both dovetail drawers and ball-bearing glides is the Jarlee at $849.99. Below that you are mostly buying engineered wood with simpler drawers, which is fine for lighter use.

What is a good budget dresser?

Look for metal drawer glides, the ASTM F2057 stability standard on the spec and an anti-tip kit. The Finch at $419.99 has ball-bearing glides, and its maker says it is designed to meet ASTM F2057.

Why do dressers cost so much?

A dresser is many boxes in one, and each drawer needs joints, glides and a front that lines up. Wood veneer, hardwood parts, heavier builds and safety testing add to the price.

What material are most dressers made of?

Most are engineered wood. Of our 52 dressers, 37 list MDF, particleboard or engineered wood, often under a laminate or a real wood veneer.

How heavy is a dresser?

The dressers in our catalogue that list a weight come in at 111 to 279 lb. A fabric drawer tower can weigh as little as 12 lb.
