Kitchen Islands & Carts Canada

The bulk of this collection rolls. A movable kitchen island solves a problem a fixed one cannot, which is a kitchen that does not have the floor space to give up permanently. You get the extra prep surface when you are cooking and your walkway back when you are not. Look for the pieces described as rolling or as a cart if that is the constraint you are working with.

Storage is the second reason people buy an island rather than just a table. A large part of this range carries a drawer, and many pair that with an open shelf or a lower rack for larger items. Drop leaf models add a fold up section to the top, which is the closest thing here to a breakfast bar and the option worth looking at if you want the island to double as a place to eat.

Measure the walking space before the island, not after. Roughly 36 to 42 inches of clearance on any side you need to pass, open a door or pull out a drawer is the working guideline, and it is what decides whether an island fits a narrow or galley kitchen at all. If the numbers do not leave you that room, a rolling cart is the version of this that still works.

Most of them do. The majority of this collection is rolling islands and carts on casters, so you can pull the island out to prep, then push it back against a wall or under a counter when you need the floor space. The rest are fixed islands that stay where you put them.

In practice it is size and permanence. A kitchen cart is narrower, almost always on wheels, and works as extra prep and serving space. A kitchen island is wider, gives you a larger work surface, and usually carries more storage underneath. Both do the same job in a small kitchen, so pick on the footprint you can spare.

None of these islands ship with stools built in. What several of them have instead is a drop leaf top that folds up to give you an overhang you can pull a stool under, and folds back down when you want the aisle clear. If you want a permanent breakfast bar, measure for the overhang before you buy.

Leave roughly 36 to 42 inches of walking space on every side you need to pass or open a door or drawer. That is the number that decides whether an island works in a galley kitchen, and it is the most common reason a good island feels wrong once it is in the room. A rolling island is the way around a kitchen that cannot give up that much floor.
