What a wall bed, murphy bed and cabinet bed actually are

A murphy bed is the original: a metal frame on spring hinges that folds flat against the wall and bolts to it for support. A wall bed is the same basic idea under a newer name, usually with a piston lift instead of springs.

In everyday use, shoppers say murphy bed and wall bed interchangeably, and so do we. On our own site the Heidi and Wallie models live together in one murphy beds collection.

A cabinet bed is a different mechanism entirely. It is a freestanding hardwood cabinet that opens like a chest, with the mattress folded in thirds inside it. Nothing attaches to a wall, a stud or a joist.

You place the cabinet where you want it, open it, and the mattress unfolds into a real bed. Our cabinet beds collection is built around one model, the Olivia, in Double and Queen.

Mounting: the deciding factor if you rent

If you own your home, wall mounting is a one-time job, and the tradeoff is mostly about looks and depth. If you rent, it is a different question. Hardware in a stud can affect a damage deposit, not just a furniture placement you can undo by unplugging a lamp.

Check your lease before you buy. Some buildings are fine with it, in writing. Others are not, and finding out after the holes are drilled is the expensive way to learn.

On our Heidi and Wallie product pages, both list the same guidance: twin does not need wall attachment, but double and queen are recommended to attach to the wall for stability.

A cabinet bed sidesteps the question completely. The Olivia never attaches to anything. You place it, you open it, and when you move out, it moves with you, no patching required.

Floor space and ceiling height you actually need

Closed, a wall bed or murphy bed takes up almost no floor depth, usually under 17 inches, because the whole cabinet sits flat against the wall. A cabinet bed's closed footprint is deeper, at 24 inches for the Olivia, since it has to stand on its own.

Open is where the real space math happens. Measure the clear floor in front of where the unit will sit, not just the wall width:

• Olivia Queen open: about 83 inches of clear floor needed in front of the cabinet.
• Olivia Double open: about 75 inches of clear floor needed in front of the cabinet.
• Heidi Queen (horizontal) open: about 68.5 inches of clear floor needed in front.
• Wallie Queen (vertical) open: about 86 inches of clear floor, plus enough ceiling height to swing the full 84.25 inch closed cabinet down.

A horizontal wall bed like the Heidi generally asks for less depth than a vertical one like the Wallie, since it opens sideways into the room rather than straight down its full height.

That makes a horizontal wall bed the more forgiving pick in a room with a lower or sloped ceiling.

Weight limits and mattress fit

The Heidi and Wallie frames both carry a published Queen weight limit of 273 kg (601.9 lb), covering the mattress and the sleeper together. Mattress thickness is capped too: 8 inches maximum for twin and full, 10 inches for queen.

The Olivia works differently. It ships with its own included tri-fold foam mattress, 6 inches thick, sized to fold and store inside the cabinet.

Olivia's manufacturer does not publish a separate weight limit for the frame. If that number matters to your decision, ask us directly before you buy rather than assuming either way.

Delivery adds to the total, priced by your order total, not by product or postal code: $49 to $249 depending on your order total. A Heidi Twin ordered alone at $1,424.99 sits in the $800 to $1,499.99 band, a $149 fee.

What happens if you change your mind

All three beds ship under the same storewide offer: a 90-day home trial, and no restocking fee if you send one back within that window, refunded to the card you paid with.

You do pay for the return shipping yourself, unless you drop the piece off in person at one of our three stores. A wall bed that has been assembled needs to go back disassembled, the same way it arrived.

The Heidi and Wallie fall under Forward Furniture's 3-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, the term that applies to our general catalogue.

Olivia carries its own separate warranty terms, stated in full on its own product page. Check that page directly for the exact wording rather than assuming it matches the general catalogue term.

Which one you should pick

Match the bed to the constraint that actually applies to your room, not to whichever one you saw first:

• Pick a cabinet bed (Olivia) if you rent, live in a condo with mounting restrictions, or want to move the bed to a different room, or a different home, without a repair bill behind it.
• Pick a horizontal wall bed (Heidi) if you own your home, have a wide wall available, and want the shallowest open-floor requirement of the three, around 68.5 inches for a queen.
• Pick a vertical wall bed (Wallie) if your room is narrow but tall, trading less wall width for more ceiling height and more floor depth when open.
