Measure the floor area first, then leave about 18 inches between the sectional and your coffee table and around 30 inches for walkways. Depth barely changes from one model to the next, while width runs from under 80 inches for a compact sectional to over 120 inches for a large U shape. An L-shaped sectional is a sofa plus one chaise or corner, forming an L. It is the most common shape, fits into a corner or floats in an open room, and suits most living rooms. A U-shaped sectional adds a chaise or return on both ends, so it wraps around a coffee table and seats more people for family movie nights, but it needs a wider and deeper room. A reversible chaise can sit on the left or the right end of the sofa, so you do not have to decide which side it goes on before you buy. That helps if your doorway, TV wall or next home could go either way. Most sectionals are not reversible once assembled: they are sold as a left or right chaise, named as you face the sofa, like the Porter. Storage sectionals hide a lift-up compartment under the chaise seat, which is handy for blankets, pillows and board games in a smaller home. For guests, yes. A sleeper sectional pulls out or folds down into a bed, so you get everyday seating and a spare bed in one piece without giving up a room. The sleeping surface is the seat cushions or a pull-out platform, so it is firmer and thinner than a real mattress: great for a few nights, less so as someone's full-time bed. Fabric feels softer and warmer to sit on in a Canadian winter, comes in more colours and usually costs less. Corduroy, chenille and smooth woven fabrics all feel different, so read the material on each product page. Leather and leather-look sectionals wipe clean and do not hold pet hair, but they feel cool at first and can show scratches. Check the path, not just the room. Measure the width of every doorway, hallway and stair turn on the way in, and the height of any ceiling at a turn. Because a sectional comes apart into its sections, it is each section, not the whole sofa, that has to make the turn, so compare your narrowest opening with the depth and height of the largest piece.
