Can a Murphy Bed Be Freestanding? Which Ones Need a Wall

Quick answer

Most full and queen Murphy beds cannot be freestanding. The cabinet has to be anchored to wall studs so it cannot tip forward when the bed is open. A few twin wall beds can stand on their own, and a cabinet bed is fully freestanding with no drilling. See our cabinet beds.

If you rent, live in a condo with concrete walls, or just do not want holes in the wall, this is the first question to settle before you buy a fold away bed. The answer depends on the type and size of bed, not on the brand.

This guide explains why most wall beds need an anchor, which ones do not, and what a truly freestanding option looks like, using the maker's instructions for every bed we sell. Freestanding cabinet beds like the Olivia come with the mattress included.

Can a Murphy Bed Be Freestanding? The Short Answer

It depends on which kind of fold away bed you mean. Here is the quick version for each type.

  • Vertical wall bed, full or queen: no. It must be anchored to the wall.
  • Horizontal wall bed, full or queen: no. It should go into at least two wood studs.
  • Some twin wall beds: yes. The maker says the Wallie and Heidi twins do not need to be attached to the wall.
  • Cabinet bed: yes, always. It is a low chest that unfolds into a bed on the floor, so there is nothing to anchor.

Why Do Most Murphy Beds Have to Be Attached to the Wall?

A wall bed cabinet is tall and shallow. When the bed is down, the frame, mattress and sleeper all sit out in front of it, and that weight pulls on the top of the cabinet like a long lever. Without an anchor, the cabinet could tip forward.

The numbers show why. Our vertical queen beds are only about 20 inches deep when closed, yet the open bed reaches about 92 inches from the wall. Our vertical wall beds are rated to carry up to 1,000 lb including the mattress, and that load only works when the cabinet is fixed in place.

Which Wall Beds Can Stand Without Being Attached?

A twin is lighter and narrower, so a few makers allow it to stand on its own. Here is what the instructions say for the wall beds we carry.

  • Wallie (vertical): the twin does not need to be attached to the wall; the maker recommends attaching the double and queen.
  • Heidi (horizontal): the twin does not need to be attached; the full and queen should be fixed into at least two wood studs.
  • Nebula, Key West, Lumina, Pur, Orion and others: the bed must be anchored to the wall, in every size.
  • Claremont and Pur Horizontal: must be anchored to the wall.

Even when a twin is allowed to stand alone, it still has to sit flat and level against the wall so the pistons and legs line up. If you have small children at home, anchoring is the safer choice for any size. Our guide to Murphy bed safety for toddlers covers which sizes to anchor.

Does a Murphy Bed Need to Be Attached to the Floor?

Usually the wall anchor does the main job, but some mechanisms also fix to the floor. The Key West diagram above shows a dual mount to both the floor and the wall. Others attach at the wall only. Follow the instructions that come with your model.

Either way, plan for two people or a qualified installer, a stud finder and a level. Our guide to Murphy bed installation costs in Canada breaks down what a pro charges.

Can I Have a Murphy Bed That Isn't Attached to the Wall?

Yes: that is exactly what a cabinet bed is. Instead of standing tall against the wall, it sits low like a dresser or chest. The bed folds forward out of the cabinet and rests on the floor, so the weight never pulls on a wall.

  • Olivia: the product page says it does not need to be attached to the wall. Queen closed: 62.5 in wide, 24 in deep, 40 in tall. Open, it is 83 in long (75 in for the double). Holds 750 lb.
  • Stow Queen: a low chest that sits against the wall like a dresser. Closed: 63.8 x 26.4 x 42.5 in. Open: 81.5 in deep. Supports up to 660 lb.

Olivia cabinet bed dimensions: open length 83 in queen or 75 in double, closed 62.5 in wide, 24 in deep and 40 in tall

The trade off is floor space. A cabinet bed is deeper than a wall bed when closed (about 24 to 26 in versus about 20), and it needs a clear path in front to open. You also cannot just push it to another room on a whim, but you can move it without patching any holes. See how a cabinet bed works for the full fold out steps.

Notice the pattern: the beds that need no anchor are either a twin or a low cabinet. Once a wall bed reaches full or queen size, the maker wants it fixed to the wall.

Can Renters or Condo Owners Get a Murphy Bed?

Yes, but check two things first.

  • Your lease or strata rules. A full or queen wall bed needs screws into the studs. Ask your landlord or strata in writing before you drill.
  • Your walls. Concrete or steel stud walls need different anchors than wood studs. A local installer can tell you what holds.
  • Your ceiling. A vertical queen needs over 7.5 ft. A horizontal bed fits under a lower ceiling but is wider.

If drilling is off the table, a cabinet bed or a freestanding twin is the simple way out. For the full room math, see our Murphy bed dimensions guide.

  • No holes allowed, any size: a cabinet bed like the Olivia or Stow.
  • One sleeper, small room: a Wallie or Heidi twin, which can stand without an anchor.
  • Full or queen, and you can drill: a wall bed like the Nebula, or a Claremont or Heidi if the ceiling is low.
  • Still deciding: compare the two families in our cabinet bed vs Murphy bed guide.

Freestanding Murphy Beds: Common Questions

Can I have a Murphy bed that isn't attached to the wall?

Yes. A cabinet bed is freestanding and needs no wall attachment, and some twin wall beds, like the Wallie and Heidi twins, can stand on their own. Full and queen wall beds should be anchored.

Does a Murphy bed need to be attached to the floor?

Some do. The Key West mounts to both the floor and the wall, while others attach at the wall only. Always follow the instructions for your model.

Can a Murphy bed be sideways?

Yes. A horizontal Murphy bed folds down along its long side. It needs less ceiling height, but full and queen sizes still go into the wall studs.

What happens if you don't anchor a Murphy bed?

When the bed is open, its weight sits out in front of the cabinet and can tip it forward. That is why makers require an anchor on full and queen wall beds.

Is a cabinet bed the same as a Murphy bed?

They do the same job, a bed that folds away, but a cabinet bed is a low freestanding chest, while a Murphy bed is a tall cabinet fixed to the wall.
