What a box spring actually does

A box spring is a wooden frame with springs or a stiff grid inside. Fabric covers the whole thing. It sits between your mattress and the bed frame. It has two jobs. It lifts the mattress up off the floor. It also soaks up some of the bounce when you sit down or roll over.

Box springs were built for one setup: an innerspring mattress on a plain metal frame. A plain metal frame is just rails and legs. It has no surface of its own. Without a box spring, the mattress would sag through the gaps. So the box spring became the surface.

Why a platform bed changes the answer

A platform bed already has that surface. It has wood slats or one solid panel across the frame. The mattress lies straight on it. So the support job is done.

Stack a box spring on a platform bed and you get two support layers doing one job. The bed gets about 8 to 10 inches taller. Some people want that. Most people do not. The four bases, in plain English

• Box spring. Springs or a grid in a fabric-covered wood frame. Adds height. Made for innerspring mattresses.
• Slat base. Wood boards laid across the frame with gaps between them. This is what most platform beds use. It lets air move under the mattress.
• Solid foundation. A wood frame with a flat top and no springs. It looks like a box spring but it does not bounce. It gives foam mattresses a firm, even surface.
• Bunkie board. A thin flat panel, usually about 2 to 3 inches thick. You drop it on top of slats that are too far apart. It adds support without adding much height.

When you might still want a box spring

There are three honest cases.

• You have an innerspring mattress on a plain metal frame. Then you need a surface, and a box spring is the normal one.
• You want the bed higher. Getting in and out of a low bed is harder on sore knees and hips. Height is a real reason. A solid foundation does the same job without the bounce.
• Your mattress warranty asks for one. This one is not optional. Read on.

Check the warranty before you decide

Mattress warranties in Canada usually name the base you must use. If you use a different one, the company can turn down a sagging claim later. This catches people out.

Two things to look for. First, does it call for a box spring, a foundation, or either? Second, if it allows slats, how far apart can they be? Many foam and hybrid warranties ask for gaps of about 3 inches or less. If your slats sit wider than that, a bunkie board fixes it for far less than a new base.

Measure the gap yourself. It takes a minute. It is cheaper than a denied claim.

Bed height matters more in a small room
