Is a Massage Chair Good for Back Pain? What the Research Says

Quick answer

A massage chair can help back pain feel better for a short time, but it is not a cure. A large review of 25 trials from 2015 found massage eased low back pain in the short term, with no lasting effect. Use it for comfort and see a doctor for new or severe pain. Browse our massage chairs.

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people start looking at massage chairs. It is also the question where marketing gets loudest. Some product pages make it sound like a chair can fix a sore back on its own. The research is more modest than that, and it is worth knowing what it really says before you spend over a thousand dollars.

This guide sums up the best outside research on massage and heat for back pain in plain words, lists the downsides, and explains which chair features matter if your lower back is the reason you are shopping. Our massage chairs and massage recliners start at $699.99, and full body roller chairs start at $1,499.99.

Do Massage Chairs Help With Back Pain?

For many people, yes, for a while. The best summary we found is a Cochrane review, a type of study that pools many trials. It looked at 25 trials with 3,096 adults who had low back pain. It counted massage by hand or by a mechanical device, and 3 of the trials used a device (Furlan and others, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 2015).

Here is what it found, in plain words:

  • Short term: people who got massage reported less pain soon after than people who got no treatment or a fake treatment.
  • Long term: compared with no treatment, the benefit did not last.
  • Daily function: people with longer lasting back pain moved and did tasks a little better in the short term only.
  • Quality: the authors rated the evidence low to very low, so the true effect could be smaller or larger.

The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) reads it the same way. Its page also notes a 2018 government review that found a small benefit at 1 to 6 months, and none at 6 to 12 months (NCCIH, last updated January 2020).

Source What it looked at What it found
Cochrane review, 2015 25 trials, 3,096 adults with low back pain Less pain in the short term; no lasting effect; low quality evidence
American College of Physicians, 2017 Guideline for doctors on non drug care Heat, massage, acupuncture or spinal manipulation are first options for new back pain
NCCIH, updated 2020 Summary of the research for the public Small short term benefit; the risk of harm from massage appears low

So a massage chair is best thought of as a comfort tool. It can take the edge off a stiff back at the end of the day. It does not repair a disc or fix posture. For a wider look at what chairs can and cannot do, see our guide to massage chair benefits.

Does Heat Help a Sore Back?

Heat has some of the better evidence. The American College of Physicians guideline says that for new back pain, people should first try superficial heat, which it rated as moderate quality evidence, or massage, acupuncture or spinal manipulation, rated low quality. It also points out that most people with new back pain get better over time no matter what they do (Qaseem and others, Annals of Internal Medicine, 2017).

For long term back pain, the same guideline puts exercise, yoga, tai chi and similar steps first and does not list massage. That is a good reason to pair a chair with the exercises your doctor or physiotherapist suggests, not swap one for the other.

If heat matters to you, check where a chair warms you. On our full body chairs:

  • The Serenity and Nirvana heat the back and the calves, according to the maker's spec on each product page.
  • The Bliss heats the back and calves only.
  • The brown leather electric recliner adds heat and massage to an everyday power recliner.

What Are the Downsides of Using a Massage Chair?

The Cochrane review found no serious side effects in any of its trials. The most common problem was more pain, reported by between 1.5% and 25% of people, depending on the trial. With a chair, the usual issues are simple ones:

  • Too strong, too soon. High intensity rollers on a sore spot can leave you more tender the next day.
  • Too long. Back to back programs add up. Short sessions are easier on a sore back.
  • Wrong fit. If you are shorter or taller than the chair's fit range, the rollers land in the wrong place.
  • Space and cost. A full body chair is large and costs more than a few massage visits.

Our guide on how long you should sit in a massage chair covers session length in more detail.

Who Should Ask a Doctor Before Using a Massage Chair?

A chair is not the right first step for every kind of back pain. Talk to your doctor or physiotherapist before you use one if any of these apply to you:

  • Your back pain is new, severe, or started after a fall or accident.
  • You have numbness, tingling or weakness in your legs.
  • You recently had surgery, or you have a spine or disc condition.
  • You have osteoporosis, a blood clotting problem, or you take blood thinners.
  • You have a pacemaker or another implanted device.
  • You are pregnant.

Bring the chair's spec page to the visit. It helps your doctor see what the rollers, airbags and heat do.

What Is the Best Massage Chair for Lower Back Pain?

There is no single best chair, because backs and budgets differ. If your lower back is the main reason you are shopping, these are the features that matter most:

  1. A track that reaches your lower back. An SL track curves under you, so the rollers run from your neck down to your seat instead of stopping above your lower back.
  2. Heat on the back. Warmth is the feature with the stronger evidence for new back pain.
  3. Adjustable intensity. You want a gentle setting for sore days.
  4. A fit range that includes you. Check both height and weight.
  5. A reclined position. In zero gravity, more of your weight rests on the backrest. Our guide on how a zero gravity massage chair works explains it.

A quick way to choose:

  • You want gentle comfort and normal living room seating: a massage recliner like the power massage recliner. It gives vibration, not deep rollers.
  • You want rollers and heat on your lower back: the Serenity, with an SL track and back heat.
  • You are tall or heavier, or want finer control: the Nirvana, with adjustable intensity and our largest fit range.

The full body chairs arrive fully assembled and need about 62 inches of clear floor to recline. Our massage chair size guide helps you check the room first, and our massage chair buying guide covers everything else.

Nirvana massage chair dimensions: 65 inches deep and 45 inches high upright, 30 inches wide, with the zero gravity recline shown

How Should You Use a Massage Chair for Back Pain?

Start easy and build up. These steps keep a sore back from getting more sore:

  1. Pick a short program. Our product pages suggest 10 to 20 minutes a session.
  2. Use the lowest intensity first. Turn it up over a few days only if it feels good.
  3. Turn on the heat. Let your back warm up before the rollers work harder.
  4. Skip the sore spot if it hurts. Pain that is sharp or that spreads is a sign to stop.
  5. Keep moving. Walk or do your stretches on the same day.

Older users may want extra support getting in and out of a chair. Our guide to the best massage chair for seniors covers that.

Massage Chairs and Back Pain: Common Questions

Do massage chairs help with back pain?

They can help it feel better for a short time. A 2015 Cochrane review of 25 trials found massage eased low back pain in the short term, but the evidence was low quality and the benefit did not last.

Can a massage chair make back pain worse?

It can if the setting is too strong or the session is too long. In the Cochrane review, more pain was the most common side effect. Start with a short, gentle program and stop if the pain gets sharp.

Is heat or massage better for back pain?

For new back pain, a 2017 American College of Physicians guideline rated the evidence for heat as moderate and for massage as low. Many full body chairs give you both.

What should I look for in a massage chair for lower back pain?

Look for a track that reaches your lower back, such as an SL track, heat on the back, adjustable intensity and a height and weight range that includes you.

Should I ask my doctor before using a massage chair?

Yes, if your pain is new or severe, started after an injury, or comes with numbness or weakness in your legs. Also ask if you are pregnant, had recent surgery or have osteoporosis or a pacemaker.
