How Does a Zero Gravity Massage Chair Work? Positions, Space and Cost

Quick answer

A zero gravity massage chair tilts the seat and backrest back together as one unit and raises the leg rest, so your knees end up at about the level of your heart. More of your weight rests on the backrest, which lets the rollers work along your back. See our massage chairs.

Zero gravity is the button most people press first on a full body massage chair, and the one they ask about most. It sounds like a gimmick. It is really a seating position with a NASA backstory, plus a motor that gets you into it smoothly.

This guide explains what the chair does at each step, how zero gravity differs from a regular massage recliner, how much floor space it needs and what it costs, with real sizes from the chairs we sell. Our zero gravity chairs start at $2,199.99 for the Serenity, and you can compare every model in our massage chair collection.

What Does Zero Gravity Mean on a Massage Chair?

The name comes from space research. NASA has studied the "neutral body posture", the relaxed position the body drifts into when there is no gravity to hold it upright. In that posture the hips and knees bend gently and the arms float up, a little like sitting back in a tilted chair. One example is the NASA report Evaluation of Neutral Body Posture on Shuttle Mission STS-57 (published 2003).

Massage chair makers borrowed the idea. A zero gravity chair copies that shape on Earth:

  • Your back tilts back.
  • Your hips stay deep in the seat.
  • Your legs rise so your knees sit at about the level of your heart.
  • Your weight spreads across the backrest instead of pressing down through your seat.

Zero gravity: the seat and back tilt back together and the legs rise so the knees sit at about the level of the heart. 1. Upright 2. Reclined 3. Zero gravity knees near heart level

Simplified diagram, not to scale. The seat and back tilt together, so your hips stay in the seat.

It does not make you weightless, of course. It is simply a reclined position where gravity pulls you back into the chair, which is where the massage rollers are.

How Does a Zero Gravity Massage Chair Work, Step by Step?

Here is what happens when you press the zero gravity button on a full body chair like the Serenity or Nirvana.

  1. You sit upright. The chair scans or you pick a program on the control panel.
  2. The frame tilts back. Motors tilt the seat and backrest back together, so your hips do not slide forward the way they can in a plain recliner.
  3. The leg rest rises. Your calves and feet lift into the leg rest until your knees are up near heart level.
  4. Your weight shifts back. More of your body now rests on the backrest, so the rollers on the track sit firmly against your back.
  5. The massage runs. Rollers travel the track, airbags squeeze the arms, hips and calves, and heat warms the back and calves on our chairs.
  6. The chair returns upright. Press the button again, or let the program end, and it tilts you back up.

The track matters here. Both the Serenity and the Nirvana use an SL track, which follows the curve of your spine from your neck down under your seat. In zero gravity your back sits right on that curve. Our guide to 2D, 3D and 4D massage chairs explains how roller types differ.

What Is the Difference Between Zero Gravity and a Massage Recliner?

A massage recliner leans the back down and kicks the footrest up, a lot like a living room recliner. It massages with vibration points, not rollers. A zero gravity chair tilts the whole seat back and uses rollers, airbags and heat. Here is how four chairs we sell compare.

Chair How it reclines Reclined depth Massage Fits Price
Serenity Zero gravity, powered 62 in SL track rollers, airbags, back and calf heat 5 ft to 6 ft 3 in, up to 245 lb $2,199.99
Nirvana Zero gravity, powered 62 in SL track rollers, airbags, heat, voice control 5 ft to 6 ft 5 in, up to 275 lb $3,499.99
Power Massage Recliner Electric to 150 degrees, 2 memory positions 61.8 in 8 vibration points Up to 265 lb $769.99
Swivel Massage Recliner Rocker Manual lever to 145 degrees 64.2 in Vibration, 8 modes Up to 330 lb From $1,099.99

Sizes from the maker's spec on each product page. Prices read from our catalogue on the day this guide was updated.

In short, choose a zero gravity chair if you want a real roller massage on your back. Choose a massage recliner if you mainly want a comfy recliner that also vibrates, at a lower price.

How Much Room Does a Zero Gravity Chair Need?

More than it looks in the store. When a zero gravity chair tilts back, its back moves toward the wall and its leg rest moves forward. Here are the numbers from our product pages:

  • Serenity: 56 in deep upright, 62 in deep in zero gravity, 41 in tall upright.
  • Nirvana: 65 in deep upright, 62 in deep in zero gravity, 45 in tall upright.
  • Both: the product page asks for at least 62 in of clear floor so the chair can fully recline into zero gravity, plus a little extra at the sides for the airbags.
  • Power Massage Recliner: needs only 13.8 in from the wall when reclined.

Both zero gravity chairs arrive fully assembled in one box about 30 in wide, sized to fit through a standard 32 in doorway, and they plug into a normal 110V outlet. For a room by room plan, see our massage chair size guide and our tips on where to put a massage chair.

Can You Sleep in a Zero Gravity Massage Chair?

Plenty of people doze off during a session, and that is fine for a short nap. A massage chair is not built to replace your bed, though. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Programs are meant to be sessions, not all night. Most people do well with 15 to 20 minutes; see how long to sit in a massage chair.
  • Turn the massage off before a nap so the rollers are not working on one spot.
  • If you want to nap reclined, a power recliner with memory positions is the better tool.
  • If you have a health condition or are pregnant, ask your doctor before using any massage chair.

Are Zero Gravity Massage Chairs Worth It?

For most buyers of a full body chair, yes, because zero gravity is how you get the most from the rollers. It is not worth paying extra for if you only want a recliner that vibrates. Weigh it up:

  • Worth it if: you want a deep back massage most days, you have room for a 62 in deep footprint, and you like lying back with your legs up.
  • Maybe not if: your room is tight against the wall, you mostly want a reading chair, or you would rather spend recliner money.
  • Check the fit: the Serenity fits 5 ft to 6 ft 3 in and the Nirvana 5 ft to 6 ft 5 in. Taller users should start with the Nirvana.

At Forward Furniture, the Serenity is $2,199.99 and the Nirvana is $3,499.99. Without zero gravity, the Power Massage Recliner is $769.99. The price jump pays for the tilting frame, the roller track, airbags and heat.

Our guide to massage chair prices shows what you get at each price level. Online orders can use 0% financing, so a chair can be spread over monthly payments.

  • Most people up to 6 ft 3 in: the Serenity.
  • Taller or larger users, or anyone who wants voice control: the Nirvana, with our widest seat at 30 in.
  • Tight space by a wall: the Power Massage Recliner.

Zero Gravity Massage Chairs: Common Questions

What does a zero gravity massage chair do?

It tilts you back into a reclined position with your legs raised to about heart level, then massages you with rollers, airbags and heat while your weight rests on the backrest.

Do zero gravity massage chairs work?

The position itself is just a comfortable recline. What it does well is press your back onto the roller track, so the massage feels more even. Results vary from person to person, and it is not a medical treatment.

How much does a zero gravity massage chair weigh?

A lot. Our Nirvana weighs 187 lb, so plan on two people to carry it from the curb into your home.

Will a zero gravity massage chair fit through a door?

Ours ship fully assembled in a box about 30 in wide and are sized to fit through a standard 32 in doorway.

Does a zero gravity chair need special wiring?

No. The Serenity and Nirvana plug into a standard 110V household outlet.
