Pick a bed that closes into something else, not just a bed that folds. A cabinet bed folds its mattress away inside a hardwood cabinet that looks like furniture, not a bed frame, and it does not attach to the wall. A wall-mounted murphy bed also folds away, but on our own double and queen models it is recommended or required to be bolted to a wall, usually the same wall an office wants for shelving or a monitor arm. Cabinet Bed vs. Murphy Bed: The Difference That Actually Matters Here

Both fold away, but the mechanism underneath is not the same, and it decides whether the room stays flexible. A cabinet bed, like the Olivia, is a standalone hardwood cabinet. The mattress is a tri-fold piece stored inside the cabinet itself, not strapped to a wall-hung frame, so it does not need to be attached to a wall at any size and can go against any wall in the room.

A murphy bed is mounted to the wall on pistons, and the mattress stays strapped to that frame when it folds up. On our own murphy bed lineup, the twin size is the only one that does not need wall attachment, the double and queen sizes are recommended, and in some cases required, to be bolted into the wall. Once that wall is committed to a bed frame, it is no longer available for the shelving, whiteboard, or monitor arm an office wall usually earns.

Real Desk-to-Bed Clearance Math

These are the Olivia's own listed dimensions, not rounded estimates. Closed, the Queen cabinet is 62.5 inches wide, 24 inches deep, and 40 inches tall, roughly the size of a large credenza. Open, it needs about 83 inches of clear floor running out from the wall it is against. The Double closes to the same 24 by 40 inch profile but opens to 54.5 inches wide, needing about 75 inches. That swing distance only matters in the direct path the cabinet opens into, a desk along a side wall is never in that path.

A desk usually runs 24 to 30 inches deep, which fits along a side wall in every room size above regardless of whether the cabinet is open or closed. What actually decides if the desk fits is the cabinet's closed width, 62.5 inches for the Queen or 54.5 inches for the Double, along whichever wall the desk shares with it. Put the Queen or Double on the back wall and the desk on a side wall, facing in, and the swing path never touches it. The one layout that fails: a desk, chair, or filing cabinet sitting directly in front of the cabinet, in its own swing path.

What About a Sofa Bed or a Standalone Guest Bed Instead?

Worth ruling out honestly. A sofa bed stays out as a couch every day, occupying its full footprint whether or not it is folded into a bed that night, and the fold-out mattress is thinner than a real one. A standalone guest bed has the same problem, still a bed-shaped object in an office five days a week. A cabinet bed is the only option here that reads as neither a bed nor a couch when closed.
