The $40 per yard column is a mid grade upholstery weight fabric. Good quality performance fabrics commonly run $60 to $90 a yard, which roughly doubles that column. Substitute your own quoted price and the arithmetic still works.

How to measure your sectional for fabric

Take these six measurements, in inches, and write them down. The diagram above shows where each one sits.

1. A, overall length. The long run, measured along the outside back from corner to corner.
2. B, return length. The short run of the L, measured the same way.
3. C, seat depth. From the front edge of the seat to the face of the back cushion.
4. D, back height. Floor to the top of the back, measured with the tape held upright, not along the slope.
5. E, arm width. The outside face of one arm, plus the inside face, since both get covered.
6. F, every cushion separately. Length, width and thickness for each seat and each back cushion.

That last one is where most estimates go wrong. Cushions are the most fabric hungry part of a sectional because each one needs a top panel, a bottom panel and a boxing strip all the way around. Measuring them as a group rather than individually routinely understates the job by several yards.

Why patterned fabric costs so much more

On a plain fabric with no direction, an upholsterer nests the pieces tightly and wastes very little. As soon as the fabric has a repeat, every seam has to line up, so each piece is cut to the pattern rather than to the shape. The waste goes somewhere, and the somewhere is your yardage.

• Plain, non directional. No allowance needed beyond a normal cutting margin.
• Small repeat, under 6 inches. Add roughly 10 percent.
• Large florals, plaids, wide stripes. Add 15 to 20 percent, sometimes more.
• Velvet, corduroy and anything with a nap. Every piece has to run the same direction or the colour reads differently across the sofa. Treat it like a directional pattern.

The number most guides leave out

Fabric is the part that is easy to quote, which is why every yardage guide online talks about fabric and stops. On a sectional, the labour is normally the larger half of the bill. A sectional is not one sofa, it is three or four separate pieces, each of which has to be stripped, repaired, re padded where needed, and recovered individually, plus the cushions.

Get a written quote before you commit to anything, and make sure it separates fabric from labour. If a shop will not break those apart, that on its own tells you something.

Reupholster or replace? The honest math

The math above is not an argument that you should never recover a sofa. It is an argument that you should know the number before you decide. Recovering genuinely wins in these cases.

• The frame is properly built. Kiln dried hardwood, corner blocks that are glued and screwed rather than stapled, and eight way hand tied springs. That construction is expensive to buy new and worth preserving.
• The size or shape is discontinued. If the piece fits an awkward room and nothing on the market matches it, the fit is worth paying for.
• It means something to you. A piece from a family member is not a spreadsheet problem and should not be treated as one.
• Only the fabric has failed. If the foam and the springs are sound and it is purely the cover that is worn, you are buying much less labour.

Test the frame before you spend anything. Lift one corner about six inches off the floor. If the opposite leg stays down, or the frame twists or creaks, the structure is going and no amount of fabric fixes that.

If replacing wins, what to look for

If you land on the replace side, the thing that determines whether you are doing this again in five years is construction, not the look.

• Seat depth against your household. A deep seat is comfortable to lounge in and difficult to sit upright in. Measure the sofa you have now and compare before you order.
• Whether the chaise can move. A reversible or changeable chaise survives a room rearrangement. A fixed one commits you.
• Removable covers. If the cushion covers unzip, the next stain is a wash rather than a reupholstery quote.

A quick worked example

Say you have a three piece L shaped sectional, plain fabric, frame is sound.

1. Measure, and land on 28 yards.
2. Add nothing for pattern, because it is plain. Still 28 yards.
3. Fabric at $40 a yard is $1,120. At $70 a yard it is $1,960.
4. Get a written labour quote. On a sectional, expect it to exceed the fabric.
5. Compare the total against a new sectional sofa at today's price.
