Quick answer
A sofa fits through a door when the door, fully open, is wider than the sofa's slimmest side, and the sofa can make every turn on the way in. Check the maker's doorway number first: our Larimer sofa needs a 32 inch door. Then measure halls, stairs and elevators. Browse sofas with full sizes.

Will My Sofa Fit Through the Door?
A sofa almost never goes through a door the way it sits in a room. Movers turn it on its back or on its side, so only two numbers matter at the door:
- The sofa's depth, front to back, and its height, floor to the top of the back. The smaller of the two is the slimmest side.
- The door's clear width, measured with the door fully open, from the edge of the stop on one side to the face of the open door on the other.
The simple rule: the clear width should be at least 1 inch more than the slimmest side. A real sofa often does better than that, because its back is taller than its front. Tilted on its diagonal, it slips through a gap smaller than its depth or height. That is why the maker lists a minimum doorway width for many sofas.
The Larimer sofa is 40 inches deep and 38 inches tall, yet the maker says it needs only a 32 inch door. That is 6 inches less than its slimmest side. The Telora sofa is 35 by 35 and also needs 32 inches. Its 7.5 inch legs are part of that height. If a sofa's legs come off, it gets that much shorter at the door.

Real Sizes of Six of Our Sofas and Sectionals
Here are the numbers that decide the fit for six pieces we sell. The last column is our own box math: the narrowest hall, at a right angle turn, where the piece can be carried flat. A wider hall than that, and nobody has to stand it on end.

For the sectionals, length and depth are the overall size of the set. Hall to turn flat is our math for a box that size and two equal halls. Prices are live from our catalogue on the day this page was built.
What the table shows:
- Most of these sofas need a 32 inch door. A standard interior door is often 30 inches, so measure inside doors as well as the front door.
- Sofa sleepers need more. The Rannis queen sofa sleeper needs 36 inches, because the steel bed frame stays inside.
- Weight adds up. At 193 lb for the Rannis and 187 lb for the First Base, plan two strong people for any stairs.
- Flat turns need wide halls. Carried flat, even the 85 inch Telora needs about 55 inches of hall at a turn. In a normal hall, it goes round on end.

Will It Fit? Try the Checker
Type in your sofa and your door. Pick one of our sofas to fill in its sizes, or use your own. Leave the hall and ceiling empty to check only the door.
No checker on your screen? Use this table. It shows the longest box, carried flat, that turns a right angle between two halls of the same width.
Hall width 35 inch deep sofa 38 inch deep sofa 40 inch deep sofa 36" Will not turn flat Will not turn flat Will not turn flat 40" 43" Will not turn flat Will not turn flat 42" 49" 43" Will not turn flat 48" 66" 60" 56" Box math for a 90 degree turn between equal halls. Longer than the number shown = stand it on end, or tilt it. A real sofa often clears a little tighter than a box.
Will a Sofa Turn the Corner in a Hallway?
The door is rarely the problem. The turn just inside it is. A long sofa needs room to swing its length round the corner, and a 36 inch hall does not give it that when it is flat.
So movers stand the sofa on its end. Now the length points at the ceiling, and only the depth and height have to make the turn. For that to work, you need two things:
- The ceiling is taller than the sofa is long, with a little to spare at the turn. Watch for a low bulkhead or a light fixture.
- The hall is wider than the slimmest side, the same rule as the door.
Measure the narrowest point of the hall, not the middle. Door trim, radiators, a railing post or a shoe bench can take 2 or 3 inches off.

Will a Sofa Fit Up the Stairs?
Stairs add two limits: headroom and the landing. Check these, in this order:
- Width: wall to railing, at the narrowest spot. A railing you can take off gives you more.
- Headroom: from a step straight up to the ceiling above it, at the lowest point. The sofa goes up tilted, so low ceilings at the top of the stairs are the usual stop.
- The landing: a turn on a landing works like a hall corner. Measure both sides of the landing and use the table above.
- Weight: a recliner or a sofa sleeper is heavy. Two people at least, three for a turn.
A straight staircase is easy, even when it is narrow. A staircase that turns on a small landing is the one to measure twice.

Will a Sofa Fit in an Elevator?
Condo and apartment moves often come down to the elevator. Measure four things:
- Door width and door height.
- Cab width and depth, inside.
- Cab height, floor to ceiling. Some cabs have a ceiling panel that lifts out.
- The diagonal, from the floor at the door to the top corner at the back. This is the longest piece that can go in on end.
Most sofas ride standing up. If the sofa is longer than the cab is tall, it may still go in at an angle, using that diagonal. Book the service elevator and the wall pads with your building early, since many buildings set move hours.
Why a Sectional Is Easier to Get In
A sectional looks like the hardest piece to move, but it comes apart. Each piece goes through the door on its own, and you join them in the room.
The Lindon 2 piece sectional is 103 by 69 inches set up, and it travels as two pieces. The Koralynn 3 piece sectional is 141 by 92 inches, a big L, and it travels as three. For these two, the maker gives the overall size, not each piece. Each piece is smaller than the set, so measure the door against the depth and height of the sofa part.
Sizing the room for a sectional is its own job. Our guide on how to measure a sectional sofa covers wall space and walkways, and our picks of the best sectional sofas in Canada compare sizes. For small rooms, see our L shaped sectionals.

Printable Measuring Checklist
Print this page, or copy the list. Measure every spot on the path, from the truck to the room. Write the smallest number in each row.
Spot What to measure Your number Front door Clear width with the door fully open, and height Screen or storm door Clear width, or plan to take it off Inside doors Clear width of each door on the path Hall Narrowest width, and ceiling height at each turn Stairs Width wall to railing, headroom, landing size Elevator Door width and height, cab depth, height and diagonal The room Wall length, and 30 inches or more to walk past The sofa Length, depth, height, and the maker's doorway number Tip: measure in inches, and round down, never up.
Three habits that save a return trip:
- Measure twice, by two people if you can.
- Use a metal tape, not a cloth one.
- Take a photo of each spot with the tape in the shot.
Before Delivery Day
A little prep makes the carry quick and keeps your walls and floors safe:
- Clear the path. Move rugs, shoes, plants and anything on the walls of the hall.
- Take doors off their hinges where the fit is tight. Pull the hinge pins and set the door aside.
- Book the elevator and ask your building about move hours and wall pads.
- Protect the floor with cardboard or old blankets at the door and on stairs.
- Keep pets in another room while doors are open.
- Have your numbers ready, so you can show where the tight spot is.

Will It Fit: Your Questions
What size door does a sofa need?
Most of the sofas in our table need a 32 inch door, as listed by the maker. Sofa sleepers often need 36 inches. If no number is listed, the door should be at least 1 inch wider than the sofa's depth or height, whichever is smaller.
How do you measure a doorway for a couch?
Open the door all the way. Measure from the door stop on one side to the face of the open door on the other. That is the clear width. Then measure the height from the floor to the top of the frame.
Can you take the legs off a sofa to fit it through a door?
Often, yes. Many sofa legs screw off, which makes the sofa shorter by the leg height. Check the product page or the box before you force anything.
Will a sofa fit up a narrow staircase?
A straight staircase is usually fine if it is wider than the sofa's slimmest side. A staircase that turns on a landing is harder. Measure the landing and the headroom above the top steps.
What if my sofa will not fit?
Look at a sectional or a modular sofa that comes in pieces, or a sofa with a smaller depth. Taking a door or a railing off can also give you the inches you need.
